DRILLING SOLUTION

Project Mission

The mission of the Newmont Tanami Operations Geotechnical Investigation project is to:

  • Conduct geotechnical drilling for the safety of multiple Tailings storage facilities (TSFs) at NTO.
  • Obtain crucial geological data to support the design parameters and consequence categories of the facilities.
  • Verify the structural integrity and stability of the site.

“Soil Mechanics completed geotechnical drilling for the safety of multiple tailings storage facilities.”

Key Objectives:

  • Geotechnical Data Collection: Conduct geotechnical investigations of Shoe and Quorn sites along with the installation of tailings, embankment, and groundwater monitoring equipment.

  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure the safety of personnel and equipment during drilling operations, especially for coastal conditions.

  • Site Stability Assessment: Provide information to interpret the foundation risks for these historic TSFs.

  • Efficient Operations: Supply all plant, equipment, and personnel including mobilisation as deemed necessary to complete the works.

The Challenge of Project

The Challenge of Project The Newmont Tanami Operations Geotechnical Investigation project faces various challenges, including:

  • Conducting geotechnical drilling in a remote desert environment while ensuring minimal disruption to mining operations.
  • Achieving accurate geological data collection through various soil layers until reaching competent rock.
  • Ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment during drilling operations, especially in remote locations.
  • Adhering to environmental regulations to minimise the project’s impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
  • Conducting geotechnical drilling in a maritime environment while ensuring minimal disruption to port operations.
