Under the leadership of Managing Director Daniel Van Liefde, Soil Mechanics benefits from over 20 years of industry experience. His journey began in New Zealand, where he started as a Driller’s Assistant and worked his way up to becoming a Driller. He then expanded his career in South Africa as a Supervisor before relocating to Western Australia in 2008. In 2014, he founded Soil Mechanics and since then, he has successfully grown the company into a respected operator within the Drilling industry.

Daniel Van Liefde
Managing DirectorWith over 20 years of experience in the Geotechnical and Environmental Drilling sector, Daniel’s journey from a Driller’s Assistant to a founding owner of Soil Mechanics reflects his dedication and passion for the industry. He leads the development and execution of business strategies, ensuring alignment with organisational goals. Daniel prioritises quality assurance, employee training, and safety. His proactive approach to performance monitoring and customer focus drives success within the organisation.
Shaun Warburton
General ManagerShaun Warburton, with over 30 years of experience in the drilling industry, is our General Manager. Shaun oversees all aspects of Soil Mechanics operations, from the start of the project to its completion. He has a great understanding of detail, whether coordinating resources, developing project scopes or ensuring technical feasibility. Shaun secures new projects and establishes a strong partnership with clients. His expertise in project management and contract negotiation makes him an invaluable asset to our team.
Nick Brown
Operations ManagerNick serves as our dedicated Operations Manager, equipped with both a Certificate III and IV in Drilling Operations. He is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of drill rigs and crews, ensuring strict adherence to health, safety, environmental, and quality management requirements. He manages all aspects of drilling operations, from procurement thorough to review of drilling activity logs and conducting project completion reviews for continuous improvement. Beyond his managerial responsibilities, Nick brings extensive expertise to his role, specialising as a Geotechnical and Environmental Driller. He is well-versed across all drilling operations and safe operation of multiple drill rigs. His commitment to upholding safety standards and ensuring project efficiency is evident in his attention to detail and proactive engagement with onsite operations.
Liam Andrew
Operations CoordinatorLiam has been with Soil Mechanics since November 2021, starting as a green Drillers Assistant. Liam has recently moved from a Trainee Driller, possessing a Certificate II in Drilling Operations, to our new Operations Coordinator. He has a passion for Health and Safety and is currently completing his Certificate IV in Health and Safety. He also possesses a Certificate III and IV in Bookkeeping and Accounting! Liam is responsible for all mobilisation and coordination of drilling crews and equipment, ensuring smooth operations and adherence to safety standards.
Dave Rodman
Workshop ManagerDave is entrusted with the overall responsibility for managing and coordinating workshop operations to ensure a safe and productive environment. His role includes overseeing all aspects of maintenance and repair activities, ensuring seamless operations. From requisitioning parts, materials, and equipment essential for maintenance and repairs to supervising fleet servicing and maintenance activities, Dave’s attention to detail ensures the smooth functioning of workshop operations. Not just a manager, Dave is hands-on in carrying out repairs and maintenance across all plant and equipment, covering fitting, hydraulics, mechanical work, and minor fabrication and welding repairs. Safety is paramount under Dave’s watch, as he ensures strict compliance with Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) policies, procedures, and regulations, conducting audits to uphold quality standards.
