RTIO Robe Valley

As we wrapped up another successfully delivered geotechnical drilling project for Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO) at Robe Valley, we showcased our ability to meet and exceed client requirements and expectations once again.

Here’s a look at our process from the initial planning to execution phase which ensured a smooth and efficient project was delivered.

Getting started (Document Control and Compliance)

Before drilling began, Soil Mechanics ensured that all project documentation complied with specific Rio Tinto requirements. Our Administrative Team managed document control, maintained communication registers and created a reporting framework to capture and adhere to contractual obligations. By implementing a streamlined reporting framework, it allowed us to monitor project performance and address any project variations as they arose.

Our Operations Team worked closely with Rio Tinto in order to prepare and submit the necessary compliance paperwork which included Health, Safety, and Environmental documentation which maintained safety and operational standards throughout the project.

Project Execution

With thorough planning and scheduling, our team set up onsite without delays and ensured all operational requirements contributed to an efficient and uninterrupted drilling process. The project involved geotechnical borehole drilling, material sampling and onsite testing. Soil Mechanics drilled 10 boreholes and facilitated the transport of core samples to the designated Rio Tinto laboratory for analysis.

We encountered some additional challenges with traffic management being required on the haul road. We liased closely with contractors to ensure we could access our required drilling locations.

To ensure that we could meet the required environmental obligations, it was imperative that we maintained cleaniness of our sites to ensure that no mud discharge remained onsite. The mud was removed and disposed of at approved locations which ensured that we complied with environmental regulations. Soil Mechanics works closely with our clients to maintain site integrity and assist with rehabilitation in order to adhere to the environmental guidelines innitiated by Rio Tinto.

Our commitment to success ensured that this project was executed effectively and efficiently whilst meeting our client’s expectations.
